2 years ago, massage parlours were the "IN" thing in Kuchai Lama, it still is and in fact has lasted the test of time!

Now, the trend is definitely 'Budget' Hotels, not just in Kuchai Lama but everywhere else in the country. I was told that the trend had something to do with a combination of factors.

Firstly, the cheap airfares and low cost hotel Model by a certain Low Cost Carrier has something to do with showing the local entrepreneurs that this Low Cost Model do work!

Secondly, there was a sort of boom in the commercial property sector, leaving many unrented premises available.

Lastly, there there was a market segment price band to be served. This takes the lead from many 'B&B lodges in the city catering to the tourists market helped too by the internet.

Now, more if not everyone can travel and it actually promotes local tourism at the same time.

Several budget hotels have sprouted in Kuchai Lama according to the trend. There are at least 5 such budget hotels available.Here are some of them.

Hi everybody..

Much have happened in Kuchai Lama since my last postings...yes I have been away for a long long time and will try to update during my short break back to Kuchai Lama over the Chinese New Year. Yes my home is still in Kuchai Lama, but I have been traveling away quite often the past 2 years. Will post mostly pictures now when I can.

Some of of you will note that some of the cafes are no more in operations in Kuchai Lama, as it is with the food business...they come and go. Those which are still around is testimony of their acceptance to the community.

Its good to see some still going strong especially, Hailam Kopitiam, Mr DIY, Alex's Fish Head noodle in Happy Garden, the RM1.20 nasi lemak breakfast...are some of my favourites.

New shops have replaced the famous Kuchai Food Court, now some interesting eateries have sprouted....so do go over to Kuchai Lama. It's now looking to be a food haven, more so than a pleasure paradise (of the negative kind) LOL! ( Yes I have actually been blamed for promoting these places...heck no...that was meant with some sarcasm really... and humour)

I best be posting mostly photos of what's available there and hope that will also be some kind of record for posterity in my case at least.....and not be blamed for 'promoting' bad stuff with my comments.

To some of you who have posted some comments (good and bad) ,I thank you for your comments, suggestions and *&%#...Yes, it happens, but its all taken in good spirits. This is actually my maiden blog and it was meant to initially join in the bandwagon of blogging, secondly, I wanted to preserve some of the happenings as a sort of record and pictures are the best medium. Some of my comments should just be taken as my own personal views and anyone not agreeing with me is perfectly ok to do so. Hey..its a free world... yes? You are your best judge...in anyway. What I have written are totally my own opinions and so I subscribe to .... We Agree to DisAgree! mantra.

This is quite a rare dish and when done right, it's just fantastic (if you like pumpkins). At $7.00 for a single helping, it's very reasonable with a few large prawns. The pumpkin tastes much like 'dhall' in the mix garnished with dried prawns. It's actually quite delicious.

Soon Lei is a popular place for loyal patrons as they serve other 'house dishes' such as Claypot 'Loh Shee Fun' (recommended), Fried Rice with fried prawns, Fried 'Sang Mien' and many more.

Go early before the lunch crowd, or you may not be able to find a table. It only opens in the day and closes on Sundays.

It's located at Kuchai Maju low cost flats. Look for the Shell petrol station. It's the first row of shop cum flats after turning in off Jalan Kuchai Lama opposite the primary school.

It's usually crowded during lunch time. It's got some signature dishes like XO Fish Head, Ice kacang and more.

Come early because the crowd builds up by early noon. It's only open in the day from Monday to Friday.

SM Sri Sentosa Class of 1978, 30th Re-Union Dinner!

The only secondary school in Kuchai Lama held a 30th Re-Union Dinner for the Class of 1978 on 25th October,2008 at the Pearl Point International Hotel.

The get together buffet-dinner included some form teachers and many who have not met since 1978! The turn-out was considered a success considering that 30 years have lapsed and we have many who are now settled in USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, to name a few.

Authentic Hailam Coffee, since 1952

The Hainanese clan in Malaysia have made their make as great cooks especially during the British occupation in Malaya. They worked for the British as cooks and the Hainanese has since stamped their mark in the food culture in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, even the Malays have their version of 'Mee Hailam', which is a great testimony of the acceptance and recognition of Hainanese cooking even among the non-Chinese. Apart from Mee Hailam, they are also well known for their brand of chops. Being creative, they have learnt to adapt from the British and created their own version of 'chicken and meat chops', but perhaps their most famous dish is the Hainanese Chicken Rice and their Hainanese coffee.

So good is their coffee, it is now the benchmark of great tasting local coffee.

At HAILAM KOPITAIM, you can find all their signature Hailam dishes they are so famous for, such as their aromatic Hainanese coffee, chicken rice, Hailam mee and their chicken chop plus some other local favourite, Hailam style!

This outlet is operated by the Goh's who hails from Kuala Pilah. Goh's parents have been operating their well known coffee shop in the heart of Kuala Pilah since 1952. They now bring their traditional cooking and friendly service to Kuala Lumpur. This shop is their first foray into modernising the way Hailam food is served and presented. It has since expanded to bandar Puteri Puchong , Bandar Puchong Jaya, SS2, PJ and Damansara Perdana area.

The Goh's are very passionate about the authenticity of their offerings and as a result they offer very authentic and original 'old' tastes in new settings.

The place is frequented by many regular customers. During Sundays. there are senior citizens who frequent the place to savour their coffee and toast, just like the good old days.

Their staff are very friendly coupled with very affordable prices for very authentic Hailam food. Like many who keeps on coming back, its also one of my favourite stops.

It's location is in Kuchai Jaya, access through the BHP petrol station via Ibrahim Maju. It is behind the block facing the CIMB Bank, next to the Mr DIY shop.

I dare say this is the best place to have Malay 'economy' rice in Kuchai Lama. It's got good variety and prices are very reasonable. It's always packed for lunch and that is testimony of it's good food and pricing.

It also serve the mouth watering assam fish and ikan pari (stingray) daily with sambal, cilli padi and condiments to go...yummy and appetising.

You will want to come back again and again. It's located opposite KFC/PIZZA HUT, same place where you can get nice breakfast in my previous post.

Highly recommended. Friendly staff and always satisfying for me.

All for RM 1.20-Mee goreng with sambal,kacang and kari.

This place has been operating for many years serving splendid Malay dishes. It serves many students as well as office workers around the area.

It's located opposite the Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC) and side-by-side with a mamak store. It doesn't have any signage, but you can't miss it as it is the only 'twin' shed along the road. It doesn't operate at night unlike the mamak shop which is 24 hours.

In the morning, one can get a wonderful array such as fried mee,nasi goreng, meehoon, kweh teow, nasi kunyit and nasi lemak. You can choose to go with different chicken rendang, sotong, kerang etc.

For a plain mee goreng with sambal, kacang, timun and kuah but without any 'lauk' it's only RM1.00 It will complement with teh tarik. Great stuff!!

Mr Lee resides in Happy Garden and is quite a handy man. Mr Lee lives by himself and he goes around in his trusty bicycle. Doing handy jobs like making small wooden racks, tables, painting ect.

Kuchai Maju - Also a Pleasure Cove

Kuchai Maju has also become a Pleasure Cove of massage, spas, beauty and relaxation centers...or is it?. many of these are fronts for 'extra' services. Evidently, these places employ, China women, Thais and locals for the services. It's no wonder why so many of such centers are found not only in Kuchai lama but also in other sub-urban areas. What surprised me was the number of them in a small area such as Kuchai Maju. Kuchai Maju is actually a vey small business enclave and like many 'new business centers' around KL, the common trend one will notice are mushrooming eateries and 'reflexology' and massage centers.

These are just some of the many 'centers' in Kuchai Maju, excluding the entire Kuchai Entrepreneurs' Park at large.

Malaysians are indeed pleasure and leisure seekers...! Care for some...?!

Kuchai Maju - A Food Haven

Kuchai Maju was developed a few years ago to add new business facilities to serve the Kuchai community. Situated behind the BHP petrol station, it consists of about 16 rows of 3 storey shop lots.
As things developed and new businesses moved in, it was clearly leading to a very popular food haunt. It might not have been planned that way. Perhaps, businessmen saw the potential for food as the old Kuchai community slacked in variety and 'lifestyle' hang-outs. As it turned out, it is fast gaining popularity as a place to hang out and meet any time of the day.
You will find enough variety to explore here and you might even find your favourite ones among them. Here are some recommendations:

The famous Ah Soon.

Very decent Chinese cuisine.

A famous seafood noodles restaurant from across town.

Want some great local toasted coffee?...This is one one of my favourite places to have coffee. Mr Foo have been running this 'shady' al-fresco coffee stall more than 15 years in this location. Its located by the Happy Garden Rukun Tetangga office next to the basketball court. His wife serves noodles and the curry laksa is quite delicious.

Situated opposite a row of shops, it also has the popular prawn noodles next to his stall. Next time you're around here, taste his coffee for a perk. He only opens from 8am till about 2 pm. Closed on Sundays and rainy mornings. next...... stop... great 'Cha Tow Kweh'

The best 'Cha Tow Kweh' in Kuchai area. This gentleman is a regular peddlar in this part of town. he also do the pasar malam cicuit. However, he is a regular on Friday's at the Jalan Selesa morning market. He starts about 7am and runs out in about 2 hours. He usually have a queue of orders, so be prepared to wait for 20 mins. After giving your orders, you can also walk the around the small open wet market.

Here is a humble 'road-side' stall that serves classic light Chinese titbits or snacks. It's facing the Restoran Choy Kei (where Alex's Fish Head Noodle is ).

Mr Sie (45) and his family have been in this business for the past 25 years according to him. His 2 sons and daughter now helps out as well.

Most locals knows this place due also to it's location as well as its delicious 'Tong Sui' fare as well as a wide variety of fried snacks such as spring rolls, 'fried devils', etc, fried vegetarian noodles with vegetable curry,. It's mostly packed in the afternoon and they do a brisk business daily except Mondays.

It's a great place for typical Chineses snacks.

Fish Head Noodle - Must Try!

Yes, there's a hidden treasure in Happy Garden. This fish head noodle owned by Alex Kwa is in fact the brother of the now famous WinSoon Fish Head Noodle in Kuchai Maju (Kuchai Entreprenuer Park), made popular by Ho Chiak. Alex is one of the many sibblings involved in the food business for many years.

Alex's (Ah Lek) stall can be found in Restoran Choy Kei, a typical corner coffee shop at 73, Jalan Lazat 1, Happy Garden, Kuchai Lama. As the road name suggests, this is in fact a very popular place to have good hawker food. I will come back to this in a follow-up posting.

Alex's fish head noodles have similar if not better taste as WinSoon's, but cheaper and portions are bigger. At RM6.50 a bowl, it's great value. Since starting here just a few months ago, he is beginning to attract regular customers at lunch time. A quick look around the tables shows that he commands a good 40% of what customers are here for. In fact he is in fierce competition with the other very popular stalls such as pork noodles, wan tan mee and cha kwai teow. So the evidence says something about his product.

In my humble opinion, Alex's fish noodle has an edge over his brother's at Winsoon Fish Head, in terms of price, taste and quantity. BTW, he doesn't open at night.

Me thinks , it's got to be the best around this 'kuchai space' !!

A tribute to the Grand Lady of Kuchai Lama

Madam Lee Ah Lan (age 76) , is an extraordinary lady. Kuchai Lama and Happy Garden residents in particular will forever be indebted to this iron lady for 'feeding' 2 generations of residents in this area with her simple array of chinese 'kueh'. She is perhaps the most recognisable lady in this area where she first started 'conquering' this area just after May 13, 1969. And she's been at it ever since. A few near tragic accidents all these years had not stopped her from doing her rounds.

Born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, Mdm Lee said she did not have any formal education and have lived most of her life in the squatters in Jalan Klang Lama. She raised 3 boys and 2 girls with her humble business. Mdm Lee starts going her rounds before sunrise to various 'stops' along her route. She is there in sunshine and rain. This tough woman gets her supplies from the wet market and goes for her rounds till late afternoon.

I once asked her why she did not stop as age wasn't on her side? She lamented about her children who have sort of neglected her and so she had to support herself. Adding that she will 'die' if she stopped working. You can't but feel for her. After all, a person of her age should not be out there in rain or sunshine 10 hours a day.

If you happen to see this lady, put a smile on her face, get a 'kueh' or two from her. That will do it for her.

We thank you Mdm Lee, on behalf of many of your customers ( am sure they would agree), for showing up no matter rain or shine.

We wish her well. Take a Bow!!

A famous and old landmark ,SMK Sri Sentosa, built in the early 70's as a co-ed school was then famous for gangsterism due to it's proximity to the kampungs in Jalan Klang Lama. Today, it's most famous for producing state and national atheletes and sportsmen. Our national badminton player Wong Choon Hann was a student till Form 3 when he left to join the Bukit Jalil Sports School in the 80's

The main road/entrance to Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park from Seremban Highway - Kuchai Lama interchange. Left turn leads to Ajinomoto and Salak South onwards is southbound to Mines, Balakong and UPM. Turn right at this junction will lead you to Jalan Kuchai Lama which leads to the 4 1/2 mile Jalan Klang Lama about 1 km away.

The new Kuchai Maju's 2 year old shoplots. This area offers many interesting food outlets offering a great variety traditional and fusion outlets to pubs, reflexology centers, mamak stores, mini market, DIY shop etc

The new flyover opened on 29.2.08 to ease flow of traffic at the Seremban Highway -Kuchai Lama interchange.

This original site housed KFC's chicken processing plant in the 70's. The Pizza Hut was only added when they re-constructed the outlet.

The Jalan Kuchai Lama flyover opened to the public, easing traffic flow in the area.

Work on the flyover costing RM30mil began in August 2004.

“In constructing the flyover, we faced many challenges such as the relocation of buildings, stalls and workshops which were situated near the area,” said KL Mayor Datuk Abdul Hakim Borhan during the opening.
He added that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) expected traffic to Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park and its surrounding areas to increase and hence the need for a flyover.

These pictures are at least 4 years old, but 80% of buildings are still there.

Notably, the Kuchai Food Court has been demolished early this year and in it's place, they are building 2 rows of 25 blocks of offices and shop houses.

You will also notice that the new Dynasty Kuchai area hasn't even been built.

However, this makes great archive viewing.

Hi all and welcome to my Kuchai blogsphere,

I have been a resident of Kuchai lama since 1972 and literally grew up here. Much have changed since then. From a rubber estate and tin mining area to a bustling sub-urban well connected by main roads leading to many parts of the city from the South of KL.

In the sixties and seventies Jalan Kelang Lama was then then main artery to Klang from Kuala Lumpur (even before the Federal Highway) that connects to Jalan Kuchai Lama. Jalan Kelang Lama then,was a place known for its flash floods, fires, a narrow and dusty two lane road and most notoriously for gangsterism in the seventies and early eighties.

However, thanks to it's better roads ,connectivity and proximity to the city, Jalan Kelang Lama has flourished. In the past 3-4 years notably, Jalan Kuchai Lama flourished, more so because it is now a matured middleclass suburbia . However some landmarks and personalities still remain as a testament to it's growth and history. This blog will attempt to post some pics of these 'historical' figures, landmarks and bedrock of this community.

I invite others to post here and share their experiences they may have had living, studying or doing business in this area. It would be great indeed if we had a real-time cam of a few spots, that will remain a dream for now :-))
